Neocon 2010

Valiant Hire visited Chicago this week for Neocon 2010 World’s Trade Fair at the Merchandise Mart.

NeoCon World’s Trade Fair

The big 3, Herman Miller, Haworth and Steelcase all had razzle dazzle displays with some interesting new products. The mesh back office chair is definitely the “look” at the moment.

Workstations continue to become more flexible, easily configurated and with lower height screens. All manufacturers had these workstation systems but I think the Herman Miller Sense workstation is still the best!

There is a continuing emphasis on green products and the range of green furniture is vastly superior to the previous years.

Stryde designed by Michael Wolk

The Stryde chair by Lowenstein was the cool new product for my proverbial money.
The show was very busy, so perhaps the economy is indeed starting to turn the corner!

Cool Exhibit

Hoda Baroudi and Maria Hibri are the Beirut -based duo behind the Bokja concept.
For those of you lucky enough to be in London soon, Mint is opening its summer show this week. The exhibition, entitled Kaleidoscope, will include many unique works that challenge the boundaries between design, art and fashion. As well as furniture from Established & Sons’ new collection, the show will feature vibrant paintings by Natasha Law and clothing by award-winning Gluejeans.

Your office chair

An interesting article appeared in Bloomberg Businessweek about what damage sitting in an office chair for 8.9 hours a day can cause. One of the better options is the Herman Miller Aeron chair. So make sure that you have a correct chair and better to sit as little as possible. See also the story below “If you must, sit on these…….”

Naturally if you want a good chair to rent to Valiant Hire for both the Aeron Chair as well as the Haworth Zody Chair.

Design encore!

Every Friday, the FT or Financial Times publish a column called “20 questions”. The most recent one with the “entrepreneur, restauranteur and father of modern British design”, Sir Terence Conran was particularly illuminating!

The designer, restaurateur and retailer was born in 1931. He founded the Habitat home furnishings stores that revolutionised the UK high street in the 1960s and 1970s by bringing modern design to the masses. Today he is chairman of the Conran Group, which has businesses round the world. Most recently, he has opened the Boundary and Lutyens restaurants in London.

20 questions: Sir Terence Conran
By Emma Jacobs

What are your three best features?
Imagination, perseverance and a discerning eye.

And your three worst?
I’m impatient, possess impossibly high standards and have a chronically painful bad back.

Is good design always commercial?
It doesn’t have to be but for a businessman it certainly helps.

Which product do you wish you had designed?
On a grand level something that captured people’s imagination like Concorde. More practically, perhaps a Thonet Bentwood café chair.

Which business lessons have you taught your children?
Work hard, express yourself creatively and follow a sensible business plan. They’ve all turned out rather well, I must add.

Best non-Conran restaurant for a working lunch?
Wilton’s in Jermyn Street. The snug booths are perfect to plot, plan and scheme over excellent British food.

Tom Vac Chair

Ron Arad ’s first solo exhibition “Restless” in the UK displays a retrospective of his work while also highlighting the quirky and fun spirit that it embraces. Visitors to the show can take it all in while also being encouraged to play video games on many LED screens or enjoy a game of table tennis.

Also this week is the opening of the first exhibition at Design Museum Holon, in Arad’s native Israel. The museum, a giant spiral of ochre-coloured steel, is the designer’s first major architectural project. “The State of Things”, the museum’s debut display is a look at contemporary design through all its eccentric branches and factions.

Automobiles are fundamental to 20th century design, but what about the structures that house them? The National Building Museum in Washington DC, is celebrating the car park with an exhibition tracing its architectural evolution. It looks back to the parking garage as a sign of 1950’s prosperity and moves to its depiction in films and television asa place for clandestine encounters and intrigue.
